Should You Wear a Mask
While Exercising?
There’s no denying that wearing a mask helps protect others when you cough, sneeze, talk loudly or breathe hard… but did you know that they may not protect you?!
Viruses were shown to pass through cloth masks 97% of the time, compared to the special medical masks at only 44% of the time. High levels of viruses in the air have been shown to accumulate indoors in closed spaces, while at a much lower level outdoors due to air circulation.
When exercising in a gym or indoor space, wearing a mask is an essential courtesy to other people who are using the facility. It is also important to use sanitizing wipes to clean the equipment before and after each use.
Wearing masks when you exercise outdoors can limit your ability to breathe, especially if you are doing vigorous exercise like running or cycling. If you are running or riding with other people, it is wise to space yourselves 10 feet or more.
Viruses can accumulate on your mask, so make sure you wash it after each use!!!
Social distancing of at least 6 feet is recommended when exercising indoors or outdoors.
If you are moving fast and breathing hard, a distance greater than six feet is necessary due to the slipstream of virus-carrying droplets from your breath, which can extend for 10 feet. Remember this next time you grab your mask and start exercising!
