Have you even known someone to complain of pain, numbness, or tingling in their back?

Have you ever heard someone refer to a herniated disc or a pinched nerve?

Herniated discs are a common cause of back surgery, a very serious procedure. What many people do not know is that the surgery may be preventable. Preventable? Yes. Imagine the relief of healing by natural means. No surgery, no drugs, no side effects and dramatically less expense. Even if pain relievers brought relief, they only cover the problem temporarily. Without fixing the cause, the paint almost always returns.

So, what is back pain? What is a herniated disc? What is a pinched nerve?

They’re symptoms.

The body’s way of alerting us that something is wrong. Since back pain can prevent most daily activities, people often over do it with pain medications. Dangerous because pain medication can be highly addictive. Pain is not the problem. It is the result. The actual problem begins with stress. To understand how, let’s have a quick anatomy lesson.

Between each vertebra is a disc. Discs are fluid filled. Their job is to provide spinal flexibility and act as shock absorbers. Cool fact: the discs fluid-filled center is called the nucleus pulposus. Believe it or not, chronic stress leads to absorption of the disc’s fluid, which causes the disc to thin. You mean the fluid disappears? Yes, without any fluid, the disc degenerates. The road to spinal degeneration has now begun. Did you say the spine degenerates? Yes. When discs lose their cushiny fluid, vertebra rub against each other. When the vertebrae rub together, bone spurs, compression of nerves, and shooting paints can result. Ouch.

What’s a herniated disc?

See if you can guess:
A: when the spinal disc fluid changes color.
B: when the spinal disc fluid leaks.
C: when the spinal disc fluid becomes hot.

The answer: B. A herniated disc occurs when the disc’s fluid has leaked through rips in the disc. That fluid now puts pressure on the nerves. It is often called a slipped disc, although the disc has not actually slipped. A spinal disc is susceptible to ripping when the disc becomes rigid, the result of uncorrected spinal subluxations.

Subluxation? What’s that?

A subluxation is a condition in which a spinal segment is out of alignment with the adjacent segment, and the nervous system no longer properly works. Subluxation is caused by stress. Stress comes in 3 types: chemical, physical, and emotional.

What’s a pinched nerve?

A name used to describe a compressed nerve because the pain feels pinching. What does chiropractic have to do with this? Chiropractic adjustments do 1 thing that neither drugs nor surgery can do. They restore motion to the spine. Spinal discs depend entirely upon motion to receive their fluid and to stay plump. Herniated discs can be avoided naturally.

Do you have a friend or loved one who suffers from herniated discs or pinched nerves? Ask your chiropractor for a copy of herniated disc information to pass along so that your loved one can finally find relief and live the life that they imagined. You can help change someone’s life. What could feel better than that?

A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.
