Heart Health through Exercise

Did you know that your muscles impact your heart health and strength?!

Over 25% of North Americans over the age of 65 suffer from severe loss of skeletal muscle (sarcopenia), which significantly limits their daily activity. This inactivity then causes loss of skeletal muscles leading to loss of heart muscle.

 

When your heart becomes too weak to pump blood to your brain, it can put you at severe risk of death. A study of 900 heart failure patients found that the lack of exercise put them at twice the risk of death within three years!

 

By strengthening your skeletal muscles through a regular exercise regimen, you also strengthen your heart muscles.

 

Here are some exercises that are great for your skeletal muscles and heart muscles:

 

  1. Resistance Training:  Building muscles in your body is also good for your heart.  Free weights, weight machines, resistance bands, push-ups, squats, and pull-ups all help you build muscle and contribute to heart health.

 

  1. Interval Training: Interval training, alternating between short bursts of high-intensity exercise with longer periods of active recovery. This raises and lowers your heart rate, which helps improve the function of your blood vessels.

 

For best results, it is recommended you spend around 20 minutes a day doing moderate exercise. Beyond a exercise, a healthy lifestyle should also include a clean, whole-food based diet and—of course–regular chiropractic care!
