Wired But Tired? Check Your Shoulders!
A lot of people come in saying they feel exhausted, but at the same time, they can’t fully relax. Their mind is still going, their body feels tense, and no matter how much they rest, it doesn’t quite reset. One of the first places we look in those cases is the shoulders.
When stress stays elevated over time, especially when cortisol levels remain high, the body shifts into a more protective state. This isn’t something you consciously choose, it’s your nervous system doing its job, but it does start to change how your body holds itself. The shoulders tend to round forward, the upper back tightens, and breathing becomes a little more shallow without you even noticing. Over time, that position starts to feel normal, even though it’s actually a sign that your body is working a bit too hard to stay in that guarded state.
It’s Not Just Muscle Tension
That tightness between the shoulder blades or the constant tension in your neck isn’t always just a muscle issue. It’s often tied to how your nervous system is responding to ongoing stress. This is why stretching or trying to “fix” your posture on your own doesn’t always give lasting relief. If the underlying stress response is still there, the body will keep returning to that same pattern.
What we focus on instead is helping the body come out of that pattern. When we improve mobility through the thoracic spine and support the nervous system so it doesn’t feel like it has to stay on high alert, posture tends to improve in a way that feels more natural and actually holds. Patients often notice they’re not thinking about sitting up straighter, they just feel less tension and more ease throughout their upper body.
If you’ve been noticing that your shoulders always feel tight, your neck feels overworked, or you carry stress in your upper back no matter what you do, it may be your body’s way of signaling that something deeper needs support.
This month at Back in Balance, we’re focusing on the connection between posture and stress. If you’re curious where you fall, you can start with our Posture + Cortisol Assessment or come in for an evaluation. It’s a simple way to get a clearer picture of what your body is holding onto and how we can help you move out of that constant “wired” state and back into something more balanced.
